Bloomington Migraine

Studies show that each year, almost 25 million people in the United States deal with migraine headaches, and about 75% of them are women. Migraines are best described as an intense and pounding headache that typically last from 4 to 72 hours, they are also often accompanied with nausea and sensitivity to noise or light. People who suffer from migraine may have different symptoms from time to time. Most cases are reported seeing flashing lights or everything around them takes on a dream-like appearance prior to an attack, this is a warning symptom most commonly known as migraine “aura”.

Victims of migraine experience their first attack before the age of 30. Even though the causes are not totally understood, this condition tends to run in families, supporting the notion that genetics play a role. Frequency of attacks varies from once a year to several times a month. It is believed that severity of pain, duration and frequency of attacks become less as you get older.

Experts believe that migraine headaches are caused by constriction and dilation of the blood vessels in the brain. People experience the visual symptoms due to the fact that when a blood vessel is constricted or narrowed, there is also a decrease in blood flow to the brain. Even for those who don’t experience the classic warning sign, the body still issue other warnings to alert a person that an attack is immanent. Subsequently, the blood vessels expand which results to a rapid increase in blood pressure inside the head and each heart beat sends in another shock wave through the arteries in both sides of the neck up into the brain that causes the throbbing headache.

The exact reason why blood vessels constrict during a migraine is still unknown. The only thing that is certain is that migraine can be induced by common triggers, such as:

  • stress
  • hunger
  • lack of sleep
  • foods (especially those that are rich in an amino acid called tyramine)
  • strong odor
  • air quality
  • flickering lights, and
  • changing weather

Lifestyle alteration and avoidance to potential triggers will greatly reduce the chances of migraine attacks.
